Do you like to stare at mudpots? These ones were recently visited on a work trip to a remote part of eastern Yellowstone. The churning pools of mud are acidic, and often over 150°F (65°C). The bubbles are mostly a mixture of carbon dioxide and steam. Sulfur gases are oxidized to sulfuric acid, which turns the surrounding rocks to particles of fine clay, perfect for making bubbling vats of mud.
